Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Cascara Sagrada 450 mg contains one active ingredient: cascara sagrada bark, a natural stimulant laxative that works by increasing muscle contractions in your colon to promote bowel movements. The capsule is filled with inactive ingredients—gelatin and rice flour—which serve as the capsule material and filler.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Cascara Sagrada's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: natural relief from sluggish elimination.
  • We looked for evidence on: Constipation, Bowel preparation, bowel regularity, digestive motility.
  • The closest evidence on file: Cascara Sagrada is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Bowel preparation (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Cascara Sagrada is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Constipation.

The evidence for cascara sagrada is mixed. It is rated possibly ineffective for bowel preparation before medical procedures.

For general constipation, the data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate how well it works. Short-term use may help, but the safety concerns with longer-term use are real enough that your pharmacist or doctor should weigh whether it's the right choice for you.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

When used short-term and appropriately, cascara sagrada is generally well tolerated. The most common side effect is mild belly discomfort and cramping.

However, long-term use carries genuine risks: it can lead to low potassium, muscle loss (cachexia), and in rare cases, liver damage. Fresh or improperly aged cascara bark can cause severe vomiting.

Cascara sagrada is not recommended during pregnancy because stimulant laxatives carry risks at that time. While nursing, it is considered possibly unsafe because active compounds may pass into breast milk.

Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer alternatives if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before taking cascara sagrada, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you take water pills (diuretics), corticosteroids, warfarin (a blood thinner), digoxin (a heart medication), other stimulant laxatives, or medications processed by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme. The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Cascara sagrada is a short-term laxative option for some people, but it's not a first-line choice because of its interaction risks and potential for serious effects with long-term use. If you take any heart, blood pressure, blood thinner, or water pill medications, check with your pharmacist before using it.

Never use it long-term without medical guidance.

Formulation

Cascara Sagrada works by stimulating the muscular movement of the intestines which is called peristalsis. The phyto-nutrients in Cascara Sagrada, anthraquiones, help to produce a formed stool in about 6 to 8 hours and have almost no effect on the small intestines. These anthraquiones inhibit the absorption of water and other electrolytes in the intestines, which increases stool volume as it absorbs excess water, and increases the pressure in the intestine. This stimulates the peristalsis in the colon and speeds the clearing of the bowel.

Cascara Sagrada 450 mg by Viva Vitamins: Common Questions

Does Cascara Sagrada 450 mg by Viva Vitamins interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Cascara Sagrada 450 mg has a known interaction with 745 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Cascara Sagrada 450 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take cascara sagrada while I'm pregnant or nursing?
No. Stimulant laxatives like cascara sagrada are not recommended during pregnancy. If you're nursing, it's considered possibly unsafe because active compounds may pass into your breast milk. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer alternatives.
Is cascara sagrada safe to use long-term for chronic constipation?
No. While short-term use is generally well tolerated, long-term use carries real risks including low potassium, muscle loss, and liver damage in rare cases. It's meant for short-term relief only. Work with your doctor to find a safer long-term solution.
What's the most common side effect?
Mild belly discomfort and cramping are the most common side effects. Serious effects like liver damage are rare but can happen, especially with long-term use.
Does cascara sagrada actually work for constipation?
The evidence we have is insufficient to say how reliable it is for general constipation. For bowel prep before medical procedures, it's rated possibly ineffective. If you're considering it, talk with your pharmacist about whether it's right for your situation.
Why is there such a big interaction list?
Cascara sagrada's stimulant laxative effects can lower your potassium and affect how your body absorbs other medications. That chains into interactions with water pills, heart drugs, blood thinners, and medications your liver breaks down—lots of drug types can be affected.
