Properly cooked cassava is a common food, but this is where the safety picture gets important: raw or poorly processed cassava can cause cyanide poisoning. Even well-cooked cassava as a food is eaten regularly, but concentrated supplements like this one aren't well studied and are best avoided due to cyanide concerns.
Side effects from cassava include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea. In rare cases, people have had allergic reactions — hives, swelling, trouble breathing, and in severe cases anaphylaxis — but all confirmed cassava allergies have also involved a latex allergy.
Cassava intake has also been linked to an increased risk of low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) and goiter, effects tied to its cyanogen content. Unprocessed cassava has been associated with neurological problems including dizziness, weakness, headache, and in severe cases paralytic diseases.

Evidence from human and animal research suggests that cassava root has marked antithyroid effects, particularly if poorly processed or if consumed as part of a protein-deficient diet. Also, clinical research shows that consuming boiled cassava leaves 200 grams twice daily for 9 days significantly reduces levels of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine and thyroxine. Theoretically, cassava may alter thyroid function, reduce thyroid hormone levels, and interfere with thyroid hormone-replacement therapy.
