Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for Ceylon cinnamon's effectiveness isn't established in our data. The facts we hold show insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for common conditions people ask about, including diabetes, blood sugar control, high cholesterol (dyslipidemia), diarrhea, and common cold.
If you're considering this supplement for a specific health concern, talk with your pharmacist about what the broader research shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Cinnamon in food amounts is generally well tolerated. At supplement doses — especially high doses over a long time — there's concern about liver damage because cinnamon contains coumarin, a compound that can harm the liver in large quantities.
In clinical trials, doses ranging from 360 mg to 12 grams daily for three months did not significantly raise liver enzyme levels, but very high coumarin doses (50–7000 mg per day) have caused reversible liver damage in humans. A small number of trial participants reported a rash or allergic skin reaction.
One person had a seizure with low blood sugar (hypoglycemic seizure) while taking cinnamon, though the link is unclear. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, food amounts are likely fine, but avoid concentrated supplement doses because safety data is limited.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Carlyle's Ceylon Cinnamon, check with your pharmacist if you take drugs that stress the liver (hepatotoxic drugs) or diabetes medications. Cinnamon may lower blood sugar and could theoretically add to liver strain at high supplement doses.
Altogether, these interactions span 443 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is worth a conversation with your pharmacist, especially if you take diabetes medications or drugs that affect the liver. The evidence for its effectiveness isn't solid in the data we hold, so ask yourself whether you have a specific reason to try it.
