Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This softgel contains one active ingredient: chlorophyllin complex, a semi-synthetic form of chlorophyll (the pigment that makes plants green). The capsule also holds soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin, and water as inactive ingredients.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Chlorophyllin's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: digestive tract detoxifier and intestinal support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Body odor, Fecal odor, Flatulence, Wound healing, digestive detoxification, phase II enzyme support.
  • The closest evidence on file: Chlorophyllin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Flatulence (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Chlorophyllin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Wound healing, Body odor, Fecal odor.

The evidence for chlorophyll's effectiveness is mixed. For urinary odor, it's rated possibly ineffective — meaning the data doesn't support that it works.

For acne, cancer, constipation, flatulence, and low white blood cell count (leukopenia), we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate it either way.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chlorophyllin is generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality evidence and long-term safety data are limited. The main concern is photosensitization — oral chlorophyll has been reported to cause increased sun sensitivity and, in rare case reports, a condition similar to pseudoporphyria (painful blisters on sun-exposed skin, particularly the hands).

Topical chlorophyll cream has also caused dermatitis in some cases. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best to avoid use.

Safety while breastfeeding is also unknown, so avoidance is the safer choice. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning either.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chlorophyllin.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 335 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before starting this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any photosensitizing drugs — medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Altogether, these interactions span 335 individual medications.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Chlorophyll may be worth considering if you're curious about traditional herbal uses, but the evidence for most claimed benefits isn't established. If you take any medication that increases sun sensitivity, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product — the combination could raise your risk of sunburn or skin reaction.

Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.

Chlorophyll by Nature's Sunshine: Common Questions

Does Chlorophyll by Nature's Sunshine interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Chlorophyll has a known interaction with 335 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Chlorophyll contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What's chlorophyllin, and how is it different from regular chlorophyll?
Chlorophyllin is a semi-synthetic version of chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants. It's been modified to make it easier for your body to use, but it may carry some of the same risks as natural chlorophyll — including increased sun sensitivity.
Can I take this if I'm on antibiotics or other sun-sensitizing medications?
Not without checking first. Chlorophyll may add to the sun-sensitivity effects of certain antibiotics and other photosensitizing drugs, raising your risk of severe sunburn or skin reaction. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.
Is it safe to take long-term?
Short-term use appears generally well tolerated, but we don't have quality evidence or long-term safety data. If you're thinking of taking it regularly, discuss that with your doctor or pharmacist.
Does chlorophyll really help with body odor?
For urinary odor specifically, the evidence says it's possibly ineffective — meaning it doesn't appear to work for that purpose based on available data.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — there isn't enough reliable safety data during pregnancy, so avoidance is the safer choice. Safety while breastfeeding is also unknown. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning either before starting this product.
What side effects should I watch for?
The main concern is photosensitization — increased sun sensitivity that can lead to severe sunburn. In rare cases, oral chlorophyll has been linked to pseudoporphyria, a condition causing painful, easily traumatized blisters on sun-exposed skin, especially the hands. Stop and talk with your doctor if you develop these symptoms.
