Chlorophyll Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chlorophyll against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorophyll by Nature's Sunshine
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: chlorophyllin complex, a semi-synthetic form of chlorophyll (the pigment that makes plants green). The capsule also holds soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin, and water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for chlorophyll's effectiveness is mixed. For urinary odor, it's rated possibly ineffective — meaning the data doesn't support that it works.
For acne, cancer, constipation, flatulence, and low white blood cell count (leukopenia), we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorophyllin is generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality evidence and long-term safety data are limited. The main concern is photosensitization — oral chlorophyll has been reported to cause increased sun sensitivity and, in rare case reports, a condition similar to pseudoporphyria (painful blisters on sun-exposed skin, particularly the hands).
Topical chlorophyll cream has also caused dermatitis in some cases. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best to avoid use.
Safety while breastfeeding is also unknown, so avoidance is the safer choice. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning either.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any photosensitizing drugs — medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Altogether, these interactions span 335 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorophyll may be worth considering if you're curious about traditional herbal uses, but the evidence for most claimed benefits isn't established. If you take any medication that increases sun sensitivity, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product — the combination could raise your risk of sunburn or skin reaction.
Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.
