HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorofresh Mint Flavored by Nature's Way
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Chlorofresh Mint Flavored contains three active ingredients: sodium, chlorophyllin (a compound derived from chlorophyll, the pigment that makes plants green), and copper. The liquid form also includes inactive ingredients—purified water, glycerin, and natural flavors—that help deliver and flavor the product.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed. Sodium is likely effective for cystic fibrosis and possibly effective for reducing kidney damage from amphotericin B (a strong antifungal), but evidence is insufficient to rate it for bipolar disorder or heart failure.
Chlorophyllin appears possibly ineffective for reducing urinary odor, and evidence is insufficient for acne, cancer, constipation, gas, or low white blood cell count. Copper is likely effective for treating copper deficiency but possibly ineffective for Alzheimer's disease; evidence is insufficient for acne, chemotherapy-related anemia, or brain tumors.
If you're considering this product for a specific health concern, check with your pharmacist about whether the evidence supports its use.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is generally well tolerated in normal dietary amounts, but the safety notes caution against high intake or supplementation without medical advice. Excess sodium is linked to high blood pressure and heart strain.
Serious adverse effects are rare but include worsened cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and kidney disease. High sodium intake is also associated with an increased risk of stomach cancer in population studies.
Chlorophyllin is generally well tolerated short-term, but long-term safety data are limited. It can cause photosensitization (sun sensitivity) and in rare case reports has been linked to a blistering skin condition.
The safety data advise against chlorophyllin in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Copper is safe in food and standard supplement amounts, but excess copper is toxic.
Copper is needed in pregnancy but stay within recommended amounts and avoid high-dose supplements without medical guidance.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check if you're on blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), lithium for bipolar disorder, or corticosteroids—sodium can interfere with how they work or raise sodium to unsafe levels (Moderate severity). Also check for photosensitizing drugs, penicillamine, didanosine, sodium phosphate bowel prep, tolvaptan, or other sodium-containing medications.
Oral contraceptives may raise your copper levels slightly (Minor severity).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is primarily a sodium supplement with added chlorophyllin and copper. If you take blood pressure medication, lithium, penicillamine, photosensitizing drugs, or oral contraceptives, you need to check your exact medications before starting.
Talk with your pharmacist about whether supplemental sodium is right for you, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney disease.

Chlorofresh Mint Flavored by Nature's Way Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorofresh Mint Flavored by Nature's Way contains sodium, chlorophyllin, and copper.
Sodium is the ingredient with the most documented interactions—it affects how your blood pressure medications, lithium, and several other drug types work. High sodium intake can reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure drugs (antihypertensives) and can dangerously raise lithium levels in your blood, risking lithium toxicity.
It may also increase the risk of high sodium levels in your blood (hypernatremia) if you're taking corticosteroids, didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate bowel prep, tolvaptan, or other sodium-containing drugs—all Moderate severity concerns.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorophyllin interacts with photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sensitive to sun), with Moderate severity; using both together could increase that sensitivity. Copper interacts with penicillamine (a medication for Wilson's disease and rheumatoid arthritis), reducing how much penicillamine your body absorbs—separate them by at least 2 hours.
Copper may also slightly raise copper levels if you're on oral contraceptives, though this is Minor severity.
Altogether, these interactions span 494 individual medications. If you take any prescription medication—especially for blood pressure, psychiatric conditions, infections, or autoimmune disease—check your exact drugs with the search tool on this page before starting.

For each ingredient in Chlorofresh Mint Flavored with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chlorophyllin
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyllin with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyllin is a semi-synthetic derivative of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. Orally, chlorophyll has also been associated with the development of pseudoporphyria in multiple case reports.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
Copper
Penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen)
Theoretically, taking copper with penicillamine might decrease the absorption of penicillamine; separate dosing by at least 2 hours.
Copper chelates penicillamine, which decreases its absorption and may reduce its clinical effects.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, taking copper with contraceptive drugs might increase the levels and toxic effects of copper.
A meta-analysis of clinical studies suggests that chronic use of oral contraceptives increases serum copper levels by a mean of 57 mcg/dL. In most people, this resulted in levels above the normal reference range for copper.
