Sertraline falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorophyllin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyllin with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyllin is a semi-synthetic derivative of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. Orally, chlorophyll has also been associated with the development of pseudoporphyria in multiple case reports.

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Sertraline (Zoloft) can occasionally make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, meaning you might sunburn faster than usual. Chlorophyllin has also been linked to that same kind of light sensitivity. Put them together and the worry is simply that the two effects could add up, leaving your skin a little more reactive to the sun.

I want to be clear that this is mostly a theoretical concern. It's not about chlorophyllin changing how your body processes sertraline, and it won't make your antidepressant weaker or stronger. The practical takeaway is gentle: if you take both, be a bit more careful in strong sun with sunscreen, a hat, and shade. If you notice unusual rashes or burning, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Chlorophyllin is a water-soluble, semi-synthetic form of chlorophyll most often used to help control body and fecal odor and to support wound healing. The best evidence is for its use as a deodorizing agent, while many popular claims like detoxification and digestive benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered safe for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

About Sertraline

What Is Sertraline Used For?

Brand name: Zoloft

Sertraline treats a range of mental health conditions. All formulations are approved for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The oral solution (including Zoloft oral solution) and several tablet formulations are also approved for panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

For OCD specifically, the capsule formulations and some tablet products are approved for use in adults and children aged 6 and older. Sertraline hydrochloride tablets (plain, not film-coated) are approved for OCD in pediatric patients as well. However, sertraline is not approved for major depressive disorder in children — only in adults.
