The evidence for L. acidophilus in this product leans toward "Possibly Effective" for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, according to the data we hold. For atopic disease (including eczema and allergies), the evidence suggests it's Possibly Ineffective.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, because it contains live microorganisms, there is a theoretical concern it could cause infection in some patients — though most reported cases have been in people with serious underlying illness or weakened immunity.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, stomach discomfort, and diarrhea are possible but uncommon when taking probiotic combinations. A rash with itching was noted in a clinical trial, but it's unclear whether L. acidophilus caused it or another factor did.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
