HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Digestive Advantage Advanced Probiotics by Schiff
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains four active probiotic strains: Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04, Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37, Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM, and Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07. These are live microorganisms intended to support digestive health.
The capsule also contains several inactive ingredients—hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide—which help form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lactobacillus acidophilus, one of the strains here, is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. The same strain is possibly ineffective for atopic disease (allergic conditions), and evidence is insufficient to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
We don't have effectiveness data on file for the other three strains in this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects including stomach discomfort, abdominal pain, indigestion, gas, bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, and burping are possible when taking probiotics in combination, but these events are uncommon.
Since L. acidophilus preparations contain live organisms, there's a theoretical concern they could cause infection in certain patients—though most documented cases appear linked to bacteria that moved from their normal location in the body. For pregnancy, the data suggest it's possibly safe, though we don't have lactation safety data on file.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or have a weakened immune system.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the main concern—they can reduce how well the live bacteria in this product work. If you're on antibiotics, ask your doctor or pharmacist how many hours apart to take them.
We couldn't check the other three probiotic strains for interactions, so mention this product to your pharmacist when you pick up any new prescription.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and a few other digestive or bacterial conditions—though evidence is modest. If you take antibiotics, you'll need to separate the timing from this product.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you and how to time it with any medications you're on.
