ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Streptomycin
Streptomycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Acidophilus interacts with.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: this works the other way around from what most people worry about. Streptomycin won't be weakened by your probiotic. Instead, the antibiotic can harm the probiotic. Streptomycin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria, and Lactobacillus acidophilus is live, friendly bacteria. So taking them at the same time may kill off a chunk of those good organisms before they can do their job.
The fix is easy. Just space them out by at least two hours so the streptomycin isn't sitting in your gut wiping out the probiotic. This is mostly a theoretical, common-sense concern rather than a dangerous one, but it's a smart habit. Your pharmacist can help you set up a timing plan.

About Lactobacillus Acidophilus
What is Lactobacillus Acidophilus?
- Digestive health and balance
- Diarrhea (including antibiotic-related)
- Vaginal yeast and bacterial infections
- Lactose intolerance
- General immune support
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a 'friendly' bacterium used as a probiotic to support gut and vaginal health. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, and there is reasonable evidence it may help with certain types of diarrhea, but proof for many other uses is limited. People with weakened immune systems or serious illness should check with a doctor before using it.
