The capsule itself and other inactive ingredients—vegetable cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate—are just there to hold and deliver the active ingredient.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold shows DL-phenylalanine is possibly effective for vitiligo (a skin condition with loss of pigment). For ADHD, it's rated possibly ineffective based on available data.
The evidence isn't strong enough to rate its use in alcohol use disorder or multiple sclerosis — there's just not enough reliable data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
DL-phenylalanine in typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects reported are anxiety, constipation, headache, heartburn, insomnia, nausea, and sedation.
A smaller number of people have reported fatigue or, rarely, hypomania. Two important cautions: avoid this supplement if you have phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic condition where your body can't process phenylalanine safely.
Also, the safety data advises against supplement doses during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — the data isn't there to know it's safe in those situations, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.

Moderate interactions exist with baclofen (a muscle relaxant) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs, a class of older antidepressants). Phenylalanine can reduce baclofen absorption by competing for the same intestinal carrier.
With non-selective MAOIs, L-phenylalanine converts to tyrosine in your body, and there's a theoretical risk of dangerous blood pressure spikes (hypertensive crisis).

DL-Phenylalanine
Levodopa
Phenylalanine, especially in high doses, can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa.
Phenylalanine competes with levodopa for carrier-mediated transport into the brain. The resulting reduction in levels of levodopa in the brain can exacerbate tremor, rigidity, and the "on-off" phenomenon in patients with Parkinson disease.
Baclofen
Concomitant intake of phenylalanine may reduce the intestinal absorption of baclofen.
Phenylalanine and baclofen share the same intestinal carrier for absorption; phenylalanine competitively inhibits the absorption of baclofen, reducing its plasma levels.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-phenylalanine and non-selective MAOIs might increase the risk of hypertensive crisis.
L-phenylalanine is metabolized to tyrosine. Some evidence suggests that L-phenylalanine, given with the non-selective MAOI pargyline, might prevent the elimination of tyramine, increasing the risk of hypertensive crisis. However, this was not reported in a small number of patients when using L-phenylalanine with the partially selective MAO-B inhibitor, selegiline.
