DMAE is tolerated by some adults, but side effects can occur and the evidence is limited. The most common adverse effects reported are abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.

At higher doses (over 1000 mg daily), mood changes including depression and hypomania have been reported, particularly in people with psychiatric conditions. People with schizophrenia who took 1500 mg daily experienced worsening symptoms.
