Deanol is generally well tolerated by mouth, but side effects do occur. The most common are abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.

It's also been reported to cause headache, insomnia, confusion, and mood changes. Higher doses — above 1000 mg daily — have been linked to depression and mood swings in people with psychiatric conditions, and 1500 mg daily has been reported to worsen schizophrenia symptoms in those with chronic schizophrenia.

There isn't enough safety data during pregnancy, and deanol is not recommended while breastfeeding.
