Deanol is generally well tolerated by some adults, but the safety data is limited and side effects do occur. The most common side effects reported are abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.

Less common but documented are constipation, headache, insomnia, overstimulation, lucid dreams, confusion, and depression. At higher doses (over 1000 mg daily), there's a risk of mood changes including depression and hypomania, especially in people with psychiatric conditions; doses of 1500 mg daily have been reported to worsen schizophrenia symptoms.

There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy, so pregnancy is not recommended. The safety data also advises against use while breastfeeding.
