Elder Berry Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Cedar Bear
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Elder Berry against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Elder Berry by Cedar Bear
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This is a single-ingredient product: elderberry extract in a liquid form. The elderberry is suspended in vegetable glycerin and purified water — both inactive ingredients that help deliver and preserve the extract.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence for elderberry isn't established yet in our data. The product has been studied for hay fever, heart disease, fatigue, lung disease, brain function, and respiratory infections, but none of those uses have sufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the science isn't conclusive enough for us to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Properly prepared elderberry products are generally well tolerated. The main safety concern is raw or unripe berries, leaves, bark, and seeds, which contain a toxin (cyanogenic glycosides) that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and dizziness — but cooking eliminates it.
Since this is a processed extract, that risk is much lower. There's not enough safety data to recommend elderberry during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it at those times.
One case of liver injury has been reported in someone taking elderberry for years alongside an underlying autoimmune condition, though it's unclear how much of the risk came from the supplement itself.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check it against your medications if you're on immunosuppressants (drugs after transplant or for autoimmune disease) or pazopanib (Votrient) for cancer. Both carry a Moderate interaction risk with elderberry.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Elderberry extract is well tolerated when properly prepared, but it's not for everyone. If you take immunosuppressants, cancer medications like pazopanib, or are pregnant or nursing, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
If you're on any other prescription medications, check them against our interaction tool first.

Elder Berry by Cedar Bear Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Cedar Bear Elder Berry is a liquid extract that interacts with at least two important medication categories.
The most serious concern is immunosuppressants — drugs that deliberately weaken your immune system after an organ transplant or for certain autoimmune conditions. Because elderberry stimulates immune activity, it may work against what these medications are trying to do, and we'd rate that a Moderate concern.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The product also has a documented Moderate interaction with pazopanib (Votrient), a cancer medication. In one reported case, a patient taking pazopanib developed severe nausea, loose stools, and liver injury after taking elderberry — though it's unclear whether the supplement triggered this or made an existing risk worse.
Alternativel, several other drug types may also be affected by elderberry's immune-boosting action. Altogether, these interactions span 117 individual medications.
