Equolibrium Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Equolibrium against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Equolibrium by Nature's Sunshine
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Equolibrium contains one active ingredient: equol, a compound that your body can produce from soy isoflavones when you consume soy foods. This supplement delivers equol directly as a capsule.
The inactive ingredients are cellulose, vegetable capsule, and magnesium stearate, which are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
Equol is possibly effective for menopausal symptoms based on the data we hold. For aging skin, osteoporosis, breast cancer, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease, the evidence isn't established—there's insufficient reliable data to rate whether it works for those purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Equol is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety and its effects on hormone-sensitive conditions aren't well established. The most common side effects reported are abdominal distension and constipation.
Depression has been rarely reported. Because equol has hormone-like effects and safety data are limited, it's best avoided during pregnancy.
There isn't enough reliable safety information to use it while breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you in either situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Equolibrium, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on contraceptive drugs, estrogen therapy (including hormone replacement therapy), testosterone replacement, or diuretic medications (water pills). Equol may change how these work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Equolibrium may help with menopausal symptoms, but it carries Moderate interaction risks with hormonal medications—contraceptives, estrogen therapy, and testosterone replacement. If you take any of those, or if you're on a diuretic for blood pressure or fluid management, check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Long-term safety data are limited, so this isn't a casual add-on.

Equolibrium by Nature's Sunshine Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Equolibrium by Nature's Sunshine contains equol, which interacts with several hormone-related medications.
The most serious concerns are with contraceptive drugs, estrogens, and testosterone—all at Moderate severity. In vitro research suggests equol may block how these hormones bind to carrier proteins in your blood, potentially freeing up more active hormone and raising your risk of side effects from hormone therapy or birth control.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Equol may also have additive effects with diuretic drugs (water pills), a Minor interaction. If you take any blood pressure or fluid management medication in that class, the product could amplify their effect.
Altogether, these interactions span 133 individual medications. Use the interaction checker on this page to see if any of your current prescriptions are affected before you start.

For each ingredient in Equolibrium with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Equol
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, equol might increase the levels and clinical effects of ethinyl estradiol found in contraceptive drugs.
In vitro research shows that equol inhibits the binding of estradiol to serum proteins. Theoretically, this might increase the concentration of free, bioactive estradiol, thereby increasing the risk of adverse effects from ethinyl estradiol, including headaches, breast tenderness, dysmenorrhea, and weight gain.
Estrogens
Theoretically, equol might increase the levels and clinical effects of estrogens.
In vitro research shows that equol inhibits the binding of estradiol to serum proteins. Theoretically, this might increase the concentration of free, bioactive estradiol, thereby increasing the risk of adverse effects from estrogen replacement therapy, including headaches, breast tenderness, and weight gain.
Testosterone
Theoretically, equol might increase the levels and clinical effects of testosterone.
In vitro research shows that equol inhibits the binding of testosterone to serum proteins. Theoretically, equol supplementation might increase the concentration of free, bioactive testosterone, thereby increasing the risk of adverse effects from testosterone replacement therapy, including fluid retention, headache, acne, and gynecomastia.
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, equol might cause additive diuretic effects when used with diuretic drugs.
In vitro and animal studies suggest that equol has diuretic effects, likely via inhibition of the Na-K-Cl cotransporter.
