HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Flax-O-Mega by Flora
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Flax-O-Mega contains 4 active ingredients, all fatty acids. Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fat; linoleic acid and linolenic acid are polyunsaturated fats that your body needs but can't make on its own.
The product also contains polyunsaturated fat. These are supported by inactive ingredients — flaxseed oil, modified food starch, carrageenan, glycerin, sorbitol, water, and caramel color — that act as binders and preservatives in the softgel.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Oleic acid is rated possibly effective for lowering cholesterol and supporting heart health, based on the evidence we hold. The other three active ingredients — polyunsaturated fat, linolenic acid, and linoleic acid — have no effectiveness ratings in our data, so we cannot speak to what research shows about their role in this product.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Oleic acid is generally well tolerated in the amounts found in everyday foods like olive oil. When it comes to concentrated supplement doses, though, the safety data is limited, especially in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
The research we have is not strong enough to say whether supplement-level amounts are safe during pregnancy or lactation. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your antidiabetes drugs (blood sugar medications) before taking Flax-O-Mega — oleic acid may increase how well they work and lower your blood sugar more than expected. We could not check three of the four active ingredients against our database, so if you're on any other medications, your pharmacist can help you search those ingredients individually on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Flax-O-Mega is a fatty-acid blend that may help with cholesterol and heart health, though evidence for the full product is limited. If you take antidiabetes medication, you'll want to check your specific drug before starting, because oleic acid may increase its effect and lower your blood sugar further.
Discuss this product with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing any chronic condition.

Flax-O-Mega by Flora Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Flax-O-Mega by Flora contains oleic acid, which has documented interactions with one medication category.
The main concern is with antidiabetes drugs (medications that lower blood sugar). Oleic acid may increase how well these drugs work — early research in people with type 2 diabetes shows that a diet rich in oleic acid lowered fasting blood sugar levels compared to a diet high in other oils.
This is a Moderate-severity interaction.

Three of the four active ingredients — polyunsaturated fat, linolenic acid, and linoleic acid — we could not check against our interaction database. That doesn't mean they don't interact with anything; we simply don't hold monograph data for them.
If you take any antidiabetes medication, check your exact drug with the search tool on this page before starting Flax-O-Mega. Altogether, these interactions span 86 individual medications.

Oleic Acid
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oleic acid might increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes taking oral hypoglycemic drugs shows that eating a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil decreases fasting blood glucose levels when compared to eating a diet rich in linoleic acid from sunflower oil. It is unknown if taking oleic acid supplements would have this effect or if this change is clinically significant. Until more is known, use caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
