L. acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy children. Gastrointestinal side effects—epigastric discomfort, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, and burping—can occur when taking L. acidophilus with other probiotics, but these events are uncommon.

Very rarely, live Lactobacillus organisms have been isolated in serious infections like bacteremia and sepsis, though most such cases involve translocation from other parts of the body where the bacteria naturally live. Check with your doctor before starting this supplement, especially if your child has a compromised immune system or other health concerns.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
