Gentian is generally well tolerated in small amounts by healthy adults, but it can upset your stomach and hasn't been well studied at high doses. In one trial, people taking gentian tincture with other herbs reported nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and bloating — a small number of participants stopped the regimen because of these issues.
