Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Gentian Root Extract. It's a liquid made from gentian root, a plant traditionally used in herbal medicine.

The extract is prepared in a base of vegetable glycerin, purified water, and certified organic alcohol.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Gentian's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: digestive health and appetite support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Flatulence, Gastritis, Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Diarrhea, indigestion, bloating — and 2 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Gentian is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Gentian is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Flatulence, Gastritis.

The evidence for gentian root's effectiveness is limited. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for wound healing, obesity, rhinosinusitis (sinus inflammation), and gastritis (stomach lining inflammation).

That means either the research is thin, the studies done weren't large or strong enough, or the results were mixed — so we can't say whether it actually works for these uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Gentian root is generally well tolerated in small doses by healthy adults, but it can upset your stomach. It's not well studied at higher doses, so long-term or high-dose use is unclear.

The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough reliable information to know it's safe in those situations. When gentian was used in combination with turmeric and ginger in a trial, some participants experienced nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and bloating — though it's not entirely clear how much gentian itself was responsible.

These gastrointestinal side effects prompted a small number of trial participants to stop the regimen.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Gentian.

If you take blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product — gentian may lower your blood pressure further and raise the risk of low blood pressure.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Gentian Root Extract may interest people exploring traditional herbal remedies, but the evidence for specific health benefits is thin. If you take a blood pressure medication, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product — it could lower your pressure further.

Pregnant or breastfeeding? Check with your doctor or pharmacist first, since safety data isn't solid for those situations.

Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — the safety data advises against it during pregnancy and lactation because there isn't enough reliable information to know it's safe. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
What side effects might I notice?
Gentian can upset your stomach. In one trial combining it with other herbs, some people reported nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and bloating — though it's unclear how much gentian alone was responsible.
Does gentian root actually work for any of these conditions?
The evidence is too thin to say. We have insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for wound healing, obesity, sinus inflammation, or stomach lining inflammation.
