Well-documented data
Glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. The most common side effects are mild GI issues: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain — especially at higher doses (10–30 grams daily).
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. A small number of people with bipolar disorder experienced mania or hypomania at doses around 4 grams daily.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use this only under medical supervision. Safety data during pregnancy is limited, but existing evidence rates it Likely Safe — still, talk with your doctor before taking it while pregnant.
There isn't enough data to recommend supplemental glutamine while breastfeeding unless your clinician advises it.
