Glutamine is metabolized to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate might have antagonistic effects with anticonvulsant drugs. However, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.

Here's the idea behind pairing glutamine with your vigabatrin (Sabril). Your body can turn glutamine into glutamate, which is an excitatory brain chemical, basically the opposite of what vigabatrin is doing. Vigabatrin works by boosting GABA, a calming signal that quiets down overactive electrical activity. So in theory, loading up on extra glutamate could nudge things back toward more excitability and slightly work against your seizure control.

I want to be honest, though: this is only a theoretical concern based on how these molecules behave, and it has never actually been reported in people. It's not a reason to panic. Still, because we're talking about seizure control, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before starting a concentrated glutamine supplement. Don't change your vigabatrin on your own.

About Vigabatrin

What Is Vigabatrin Used For?

Brand name: Sabril

Vigabatrin is used to treat two types of seizure conditions. For refractory complex partial seizures (seizures that have not responded well to other treatments), vigabatrin oral solution and tablets are used as an add-on therapy in patients 2 years of age and older — it is not a first-line treatment. Sabril, Vigadrone, and vigabatrin-branded products carry this indication.

For infantile spasms — a specific type of seizure disorder in very young children — vigabatrin oral solution is used as a standalone (monotherapy) treatment in infants 1 month to 2 years of age. Vigafyde oral solution is indicated specifically for infantile spasms monotherapy in this same age group. In all cases, treatment is only appropriate when the potential benefits outweigh the risk of permanent vision loss.
