Glutamine is metabolized to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate might have antagonistic effects with anticonvulsant drugs. However, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. The phenobarbital part of your medicine is the seizure-calming ingredient, and it works partly by quieting overactive nerve signals in the brain. Glutamine, once it's in your body, can be turned into glutamate, which is one of the brain's main excitatory (revving-up) chemicals. So in theory, loading up on glutamine could push in the opposite direction and slightly blunt how well the phenobarbital keeps things calm.

I want to be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based on chemistry, not something that's actually been reported in real patients. If it ever mattered, you might notice less seizure control. Since phenobarbital is a medicine where steady levels count, I'd just run any glutamine supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first rather than starting it on your own.
