Drug & supplement interaction

Glutamine + Rivaroxaban

Rivaroxaban brand name: Xarelto.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Glutamine and Rivaroxaban in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Glutamine and Rivaroxaban

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Rivaroxaban and Glutamine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Rivaroxaban

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Rivaroxaban is filed under 5 classifications — including anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs, p-glycoprotein substrates, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates. Glutamine has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being anticonvulsants (moderate) — and none of Rivaroxaban’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Glutamine and Rivaroxaban May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

Reported for Glutamine but not commonly for Rivaroxaban: chest pain, muscle pain, stomach pain and constipation.

Effects for Rivaroxaban come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Glutamine come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 205,037 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Rivaroxaban that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

This page covers Glutamine only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Rivaroxaban page lists 285 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Danshen (major), Grapefruit (major), Piracetam (major) and St. John's Wort (major).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rivaroxaban page

“Grapefruit is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking rivaroxaban (Xarelto). It slows how the body clears this blood thinner, and higher levels mean more bleeding risk.”

About Glutamine

What is Glutamine?

  • Muscle recovery and sports performance
  • Gut health and 'leaky gut'
  • Recovery from severe illness or injury
  • Immune support
  • Side effects of cancer treatment (mucositis)
  • Sickle cell disease (prescription form)

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and is usually made in your muscles. A prescription form is FDA-approved to help reduce sickle cell disease complications, but for most popular uses such as muscle building, gut health, and immunity the evidence is limited or mixed. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but anyone with serious liver or kidney problems should check with a doctor first.

Amino acid (made in the body and found in protein-rich foods) · Powder, capsules, tablets, prescription oral powder (for sickle cell disease)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Glutamine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Glutamine record says about it on its own.

Glutamine: dosing

There is no single standardized dose of glutamine for general supplement use, and the right amount depends on why it is being used. Doses studied in research and used in hospitals vary widely and are often individualized. The prescription product for sickle cell disease is dosed by body weight and prescribed by a doctor, so it should only be used as directed by your healthcare team. For over-the-counter products, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed the recommended amount.

About Rivaroxaban

What Is Rivaroxaban Used For?

Brand name: Xarelto

Rivaroxaban tablets are used to reduce the risk of stroke in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm), treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT, a blood clot in a vein) and pulmonary embolism (PE, a blood clot in the lungs), and lower the chances of these clots coming back. They also help prevent clots after hip or knee replacement surgery, protect hospitalized patients at risk for clots, and — in combination with aspirin — reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with coronary artery disease (CAD) or peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Rivaroxaban tablets are also approved for treating VTE (venous thromboembolism, blood clots in veins) and preventing recurrence in pediatric patients from birth to under 18 years, and for preventing clots in children aged 2 and older with congenital heart disease after the Fontan procedure. Rivaroxaban for oral suspension (available as Rivaroxaban Granule and Xarelto oral suspension) is specifically indicated for these two pediatric uses.
