Vigabatrin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kava interacts with.

Combining kava with CNS depressants can have additive sedative effects.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.

Here's the simple version: both kava and vigabatrin (Sabril) calm down activity in your brain. Vigabatrin already works by quieting abnormal electrical signals, and it commonly causes drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, and slowed reflexes on its own. Kava has its own calming, sedative effect. Stack the two together and those effects can add up, leaving you more sleepy, foggy, or unsteady than expected. That's a real concern for falls or trouble concentrating.

This isn't about one changing the other's blood levels, it's simply doubling up on sedation, and the evidence here is solid. There's also kava's separate risk of liver harm to keep in mind. Please don't stop or adjust your seizure medicine on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding kava.

Kava is a Pacific Island plant traditionally used to promote relaxation and ease anxiety, and some studies suggest it may help mild anxiety. However, kava has been linked to rare but serious liver damage, so it should be used with caution, avoided by people with liver problems, and only used after talking with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Vigabatrin

What Is Vigabatrin Used For?

Brand name: Sabril

Vigabatrin is used to treat two types of seizure conditions. For refractory complex partial seizures (seizures that have not responded well to other treatments), vigabatrin oral solution and tablets are used as an add-on therapy in patients 2 years of age and older — it is not a first-line treatment. Sabril, Vigadrone, and vigabatrin-branded products carry this indication.

For infantile spasms — a specific type of seizure disorder in very young children — vigabatrin oral solution is used as a standalone (monotherapy) treatment in infants 1 month to 2 years of age. Vigafyde oral solution is indicated specifically for infantile spasms monotherapy in this same age group. In all cases, treatment is only appropriate when the potential benefits outweigh the risk of permanent vision loss.
