Here's the gist: Marsh Labrador tea has been noted to deepen the calming, sedating effects of central nervous system depressants. Vigabatrin (Sabril) works by quieting overactive electrical signals in the brain, and it can already cause drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, and trouble concentrating on its own. The concern is that stacking this herb on top could leave you feeling more sleepy or unsteady than usual.

I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical caution based on how the plant behaves, not on solid human studies with vigabatrin specifically. Vigabatrin isn't a prodrug, so we're really talking about overlapping sedation rather than changed drug levels. Still, Marsh Labrador tea contains grayanotoxins that can be genuinely toxic, so I'd skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Marsh Labrador tea is a bog-growing shrub used in folk medicine for coughs, colds, and skin problems, but high-quality human evidence for any use is lacking. Because it contains grayanotoxins (andromedotoxin) that can be poisonous, it is not considered safe for routine use, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.

About Vigabatrin

What Is Vigabatrin Used For?

Brand name: Sabril

Vigabatrin is used to treat two types of seizure conditions. For refractory complex partial seizures (seizures that have not responded well to other treatments), vigabatrin oral solution and tablets are used as an add-on therapy in patients 2 years of age and older — it is not a first-line treatment. Sabril, Vigadrone, and vigabatrin-branded products carry this indication.

For infantile spasms — a specific type of seizure disorder in very young children — vigabatrin oral solution is used as a standalone (monotherapy) treatment in infants 1 month to 2 years of age. Vigafyde oral solution is indicated specifically for infantile spasms monotherapy in this same age group. In all cases, treatment is only appropriate when the potential benefits outweigh the risk of permanent vision loss.
