Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thinking on this pairing. Aristada (aripiprazole lauroxil) is a long-acting injection used to treat schizophrenia, and one of its effects can be sedation or drowsiness. Marsh Labrador tea has been noted to add to the effects of sedating substances like alcohol and barbiturates, so in theory it could deepen that calming, sleepy effect when combined with this medication.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how the plant behaves, not on real studies of these two together. Still, since Marsh Labrador tea also contains potentially toxic grayanotoxins and isn't considered safe for routine use, I'd skip it and run any questions past your prescriber or pharmacist first.

“Aripiprazole lauroxil (Aristada) is a long-acting antipsychotic injection, and because each dose keeps working for weeks, a bad supplement pairing cannot be undone by skipping a pill. So the 16 major-rated entries among its 233 interactions on file deserve to be understood first.”

About Marsh Labrador Tea

What is Marsh Labrador Tea?

Marsh Labrador Tea
  • Colds and respiratory complaints
  • Cough and congestion
  • Mild aches and joint discomfort
  • Topical relief of skin irritation, swelling, and insect bites
  • Traditional use as a diuretic

Marsh Labrador tea is a bog-growing shrub used in folk medicine for coughs, colds, and skin problems, but high-quality human evidence for any use is lacking. Because it contains grayanotoxins (andromedotoxin) that can be poisonous, it is not considered safe for routine use, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.
