Here's the gist: Marsh Labrador tea is thought to add to the sedating, calming effects of substances that slow down the brain. Topiramate isn't a barbiturate, but it does work by quieting overactive nerve signals, and it can already cause drowsiness, dizziness, slowed thinking, trouble concentrating, and fatigue. So in theory, pairing the two could leave you feeling more sleepy or foggy than usual.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. The interaction is theoretical, based on how these things behave rather than real human studies. It doesn't change how your topiramate is broken down, it's more about overlapping effects. Since this tea also contains naturally toxic compounds, I'd skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor before trying anything herbal alongside your seizure medicine.

What Is Topiramate Used For?

Brand names: Topamax, Trokendi XR, Qudexy XR, Eprontia

  • Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures including primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (formerly known as a grand mal seizure; seizure that involves the entire body) and partial onset seizures (seizures that involve only one part of the brain). Topiramate is also used with other medications to control seizures in people who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delays). Topiramate is also used to prevent migraine headaches but not to relieve the pain of migraine headaches when they occur. Topiramate is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
