Here's the gist for Keppra (levetiracetam). Marsh Labrador tea has a long folk reputation for calming or sedating effects, and our records flag that it may add to the drowsiness caused by alcohol and similar nervous-system depressants. Levetiracetam isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about one speeding up or slowing down the other in your liver. It's simpler than that: both can make you sleepy, so stacking them could leave you extra tired, foggy, dizzy, or less steady on your feet.

I'll be straight with you, this is a theoretical concern based on how the herb behaves, not solid human studies. On top of that, marsh Labrador tea contains grayanotoxins that can actually be poisonous, so I'd steer clear of it regardless. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything new with your seizure medicine.

Marsh Labrador tea is a bog-growing shrub used in folk medicine for coughs, colds, and skin problems, but high-quality human evidence for any use is lacking. Because it contains grayanotoxins (andromedotoxin) that can be poisonous, it is not considered safe for routine use, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.

About Levetiracetam

What Is Levetiracetam Used For?

Brand names: Keppra, Elepsia XR, Spritam

Levetiracetam is used to treat several types of seizures. It treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain) and is used as add-on therapy for myoclonic seizures (sudden, brief muscle jerks) in people with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy aged 12 and older, and for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures) in people with idiopathic generalized epilepsy aged 6 and older.

Age eligibility varies by product. Keppra oral and Roweepra tablets treat partial-onset seizures in patients as young as 1 month. Spritam and levetiracetam tablets for oral suspension treat partial-onset seizures in patients 4 years and older weighing more than 20 kg. Extended-release products — including Elepsia XR, Keppra XR, and Levetiracetam ER — are approved only for partial-onset seizures in patients 12 years and older. Injectable forms are used intravenously when a patient temporarily cannot take oral medication.
