Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Marsh Labrador tea seems to deepen the sedating, sleepy effect of nervous-system calmers, and Zolpidem (Ambien) is exactly that kind of drug. So pairing them could leave you more drowsy than you bargained for. Think extra grogginess, dizziness, poor balance, and feeling foggy or hungover the next morning. For some people that means a higher risk of stumbles or middle-of-the-night confusion.

I'll be honest with you: this caution is based on how the plant behaves in theory, not on solid human studies, so it's a 'be careful' rather than a 'never.' Marsh Labrador tea also contains potentially toxic grayanotoxins, which is its own reason for caution. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Marsh Labrador Tea

What is Marsh Labrador Tea?

Marsh Labrador Tea
  • Colds and respiratory complaints
  • Cough and congestion
  • Mild aches and joint discomfort
  • Topical relief of skin irritation, swelling, and insect bites
  • Traditional use as a diuretic

Marsh Labrador tea is a bog-growing shrub used in folk medicine for coughs, colds, and skin problems, but high-quality human evidence for any use is lacking. Because it contains grayanotoxins (andromedotoxin) that can be poisonous, it is not considered safe for routine use, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.

About Zolpidem

What Is Zolpidem Used For?

Brand names: Ambien CR, Intermezzo, Sublinox

Zolpidem is used short-term for insomnia. Most formulations — including Ambien, oral tablets, and Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules — are approved to help people who have trouble falling asleep at bedtime. Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules are specifically indicated for adults under 65.

The extended-release formulations (including Zolpidem Tartrate Extended-Release Tablets) help with both falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. Sublingual tablets (Edluar, Zolpidem Tartrate Sublingual Tablet, and Zolpidem tartrate sublingual) are taken as needed when you wake up in the middle of the night and cannot get back to sleep — but only if at least 4 hours of sleep time remain before you need to be up.
