Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: brexanolone (Zulresso) already works by calming the brain, and it's known to make people sleepy. In fact, it's given as a slow IV drip in a monitored hospital setting because it can cause heavy drowsiness and even sudden loss of consciousness. Marsh Labrador tea has been reported to add to the effects of sedatives like alcohol and barbiturates, so the worry is that pairing the two could deepen that sleepiness.

To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how the herb behaves, not proven studies with brexanolone. Still, since brexanolone is so sedating (and this herb also contains potentially toxic grayanotoxins), I'd skip the tea around your treatment and check with your care team first.

About Marsh Labrador Tea

What is Marsh Labrador Tea?

Marsh Labrador Tea
  • Colds and respiratory complaints
  • Cough and congestion
  • Mild aches and joint discomfort
  • Topical relief of skin irritation, swelling, and insect bites
  • Traditional use as a diuretic

Marsh Labrador tea is a bog-growing shrub used in folk medicine for coughs, colds, and skin problems, but high-quality human evidence for any use is lacking. Because it contains grayanotoxins (andromedotoxin) that can be poisonous, it is not considered safe for routine use, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.
