Oxazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kava interacts with.

Combining kava with CNS depressants can have additive sedative effects.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.

Here's the thing with kava and oxazepam (Serax): both calm down activity in your brain, so taking them together stacks one calming effect on top of another. Oxazepam already slows things down to ease anxiety, and kava's kavalactones appear to do something similar. Put them together and you can end up feeling much drowsier, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet than you'd expect, which raises the risk of falls or slowed reflexes when driving.

This isn't just a theory. Expert anxiety treatment guidelines specifically say to avoid using kava with benzodiazepines. On top of that, kava has been tied to rare liver injury, so caution makes sense. Please don't start, stop, or change either one on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Oxazepam is particularly useful for older adults experiencing anxiety, tension, agitation, or irritability. It is also used for people going through alcohol withdrawal who have tremors, agitation, or anxiety.
