Irbesartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Kava interacts with.

Theoretically, kava might increase levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that kava significantly inhibits CYP2C9 enzymes. This effect has not yet been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for you: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down irbesartan. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not in actual people) suggest kava can slow that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, irbesartan could build up a bit more than usual, which might nudge your blood pressure lower and bring on things like dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling unusually tired, especially when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is theoretical and hasn't actually been seen in humans, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger concern with kava is its rare link to liver damage. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

What Is Irbesartan Used For?

Brand names: Avapro, Aprovel

Irbesartan tablets — sold as Avapro and under the generic name Irbesartan — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including stroke and heart attack. The medication can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Irbesartan tablets are also used to treat diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease caused by diabetes) in adults who have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated creatinine levels, and significant protein in the urine. In these patients, it slows the worsening of kidney disease.
