Phenelzine Sulfate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kava interacts with.

Combining kava with CNS depressants can have additive sedative effects.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.

Here's the thing to know about pairing kava with phenelzine (Nardil): both can put the brakes on your central nervous system. Kava has its own calming, sedating effect, and when you stack it on top of Nardil, those effects can add up. That can leave you feeling extra drowsy, foggy, or slowed down, with slower reflexes that make driving or operating machinery riskier.

There's another reason to be careful here. Nardil is an MAOI, and it's already hard on the liver, while kava itself has been linked to rare but serious liver damage. Putting them together adds worry on two fronts. Please don't start kava without talking to your pharmacist or doctor first, especially while you're on an MAOI like this one.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
