HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Glutamine Fruit Punch Flavor by Universal
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: glutamine, an amino acid your body uses in protein metabolism and immune function. It comes as a powder in fruit punch flavor, with inactive ingredients including citric acid, malic acid, and artificial sweeteners (acesulfame potassium and sucralose) for taste, plus Red Lake #40 colorant.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. It's possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma.
The evidence we hold shows promise in these areas, though the strength of proof varies by condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Glutamine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though a number of trial participants experienced stomach upset — belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain are the most common side effects, especially at higher doses. Headache, musculoskeletal pain, and cough have also been reported.
Dizziness has occurred, and two people with bipolar disorder reported mood changes (mania or hypomania) while taking glutamine. The safety data in pregnancy and lactation is rated likely safe, so supplemental glutamine is generally considered appropriate in those settings.
However, if you have kidney or liver disease, use it only under your doctor's supervision. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding and considering glutamine, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check

Anticonvulsants (seizure medications) are the chief concern — glutamine might blunt their effectiveness. Altogether, these interactions span 50 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to see if yours is affected, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Glutamine may help with sickle cell disease or HIV-related wasting and is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, though digestive upset and headache can happen. The main caution is if you take anticonvulsants — check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
