HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Gotukola Herb Powder by Bixa Botanical
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product is a single-ingredient powder: Centella asiatica, the plant commonly called gotu kola. It contains no added inactive ingredients or fillers — just the herb itself in powder form.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gotu kola is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor circulation in the legs) and burns.
For cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease, the evidence isn't strong enough to say either way. Radiation dermatitis is rated possibly ineffective, and there's not enough reliable data on its use for general anxiety.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Short-term use of gotu kola is generally well tolerated, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects are gastric irritation and nausea when taken by mouth.
Serious liver toxicity is rare but has been reported in a small number of cases; however, those reports didn't confirm gotu kola was the sole cause or measure the doses used. In one clinical trial where liver function was monitored, 120 mg daily for 6 months showed no liver changes.
The safety data advises against gotu kola during pregnancy and breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know if it's safe in either situation. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, muscle relaxers) — gotu kola may boost their sedative effects. Also flag any hepatotoxic drugs (medications known to stress the liver) for the same reason.
No interactions are documented beyond these two categories for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu kola powder may be worth considering if you're interested in supporting circulation or wound healing, but the evidence is modest. It's most important to check your medications — especially sedatives, anti-anxiety drugs, sleep aids, and any medication that affects your liver — with your own doctor or pharmacist before you start.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have liver concerns, discuss this with them first.

Centella asiatica powder monograph & interactionsGotukola Herb Powder by Bixa Botanical Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gotukola Herb Powder by Bixa Botanical contains gotu kola, which interacts with two major drug categories.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, and similar drugs) — gotu kola may increase their sedative effects through a mechanism in the brain. It also may have additive adverse effects when combined with hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can stress the liver).
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Additionally, gotu kola's theoretical sedative effects come from how it may bind to GABA receptors, a brain pathway involved in calming. With hepatotoxic drugs, the concern is additive liver stress, though case reports of liver toxicity tied to gotu kola exist, contaminants and exact doses in those cases weren't confirmed.
Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below with your exact prescriptions before you start, especially if you take anything for sleep, anxiety, or any medication known to affect your liver.
