In a clinical trial, a small number of people reported transient abdominal pain or nausea when taking guava leaf extract by mouth. Topically (on the skin), guava leaf extract may cause contact dermatitis or, in rare cases, worsen eczema or atopic dermatitis — one reported case involved a 17-year-old whose eczema flared after bathing in guava leaf tea; it improved once he stopped.
For pregnancy, there's no safety data on file. For breastfeeding, guava is rated likely safe.
