What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gynostemma leaf extract (also called jiaogulan). It's delivered as a liquid extract and contains alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence supports jiaogulan as possibly effective for diabetes. For athletic performance, cancer, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease, and respiratory tract infections, there isn't enough reliable evidence to know whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Jiaogulan appears to be generally well tolerated when used as a tea or supplement for up to four months. The most common side effects are diarrhea and nausea; dry mouth, dizziness, and insomnia have also been reported.
However, long-term safety hasn't been well studied. The safety data advises against using jiaogulan during pregnancy because it may affect the developing baby, and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough safety information.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you in either situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (moderate risk of bleeding), immunosuppressants (moderate risk of reduced effectiveness), or antidiabetes medications (moderate risk of low blood sugar).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gynostemma may be worth considering if you're looking at options for blood sugar support and have no relevant medications. If you take blood thinners, immunosuppressants, or antidiabetes drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the interaction risks are real.
Don't use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Gynostemma by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawaii Pharm's Gynostemma contains jiaogulan leaf extract, which interacts with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners), immunosuppressants, and antidiabetes medications.
The most serious concern is a moderate-severity risk of increased bleeding when combined with blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin, because jiaogulan may have blood-thinning effects of its own.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Jiaogulan may also decrease how well immunosuppressive therapy works by stimulating your immune system — a moderate interaction if you take medications to suppress immunity after an organ transplant or for autoimmune conditions. Additionally, because jiaogulan can lower blood glucose levels, it carries a moderate risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when taken alongside antidiabetes drugs like metformin or insulin.
Altogether, these interactions span 327 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below to search your exact prescriptions before starting this product.
