Hops Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Pure Herbs
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Hops against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Pure Herbs Hops is a liquid extract made from one active ingredient: hops flower extract. Hops (the female flowers of the hop plant) has been used traditionally to support relaxation and sleep, though solid evidence for these uses isn't established in the data we hold.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for hops is insufficient to rate for the conditions listed — age-related cognitive decline, sexual dysfunction, anxiety, ADHD, dyspepsia (indigestion), and insomnia. That means we don't have reliable data yet showing whether it works for these purposes, so claims about what it does are based on tradition rather than proof.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hops is generally well tolerated in the short term but may cause drowsiness. Long-term safety hasn't been well studied.
There's not enough safety information to recommend it during pregnancy, so it's best avoided then. We don't have enough data on safety during breastfeeding either, so avoid it while nursing.
Occupational exposure to hops dust (mainly in workers handling the plant) has been linked to chronic respiratory symptoms like dry cough, shortness of breath, and chronic bronchitis. Orally, a small number of cases of postmenopausal bleeding have been reported in people taking supplements containing both hops and soy, though it's unclear which ingredient (or the combination) caused it.
Menstrual disturbances have also been reported in women harvesting hops. Topically, allergic reactions and contact dermatitis can occur from fresh hops plant and pollen.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this hops extract, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on sedative drugs (like sleep aids or anti-anxiety medications) — Moderate interaction risk. Also flag any hormone replacement therapy or estrogen-containing medications, and any drugs metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP1A2 pathways (Minor risk), though the latter may not cause a clinically significant effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking for support with sleep or relaxation and you take sedative medications or hormone therapy, hops needs a check-in with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real. The evidence for what hops actually does isn't solid yet.
Keep in mind it's not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Hops by Pure Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pure Herbs Hops Flower Extract does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with sedative drugs (CNS depressants) — hops may add to their drowsiness effect, which is a Moderate-severity interaction. Animal research shows hops has sedative properties, so combining it with sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, or other sedating drugs could amplify that effect.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Estrogens, particularly hormone replacement therapy, are also a Moderate concern. In theory, large amounts of hops might compete with these hormones for how your body processes them, though most commercial hops extracts contain only small amounts of the active constituents involved.
Two other drug categories show Minor interactions: medications broken down by CYP3A4 and CYP1A2 enzymes (your liver's metabolic pathways). While animal studies suggest hops constituents could theoretically affect how these drugs are processed, human studies have not shown a clinically significant effect.
Altogether, these interactions span 864 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Hops with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Hops Flower Extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of hops with sedative drugs might cause additive sedation.
Some animal research shows that hops has sedative effects.
Estrogens
Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of hops might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
In vitro research suggests that certain hops constituents can competitively bind to estrogen receptors. However, most hops extracts contain very small amounts of these constituents.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Hops extract does not seem to affect the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that flavonoid constituents of hops inhibit CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, does not affect levels of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.
