Hops Extract Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Hops Extract against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: hops flower extract. Hops has been used traditionally for sleep and relaxation, and it does show sedative properties in animal research.
There are no inactive ingredients listed for this powder.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence on hops extract for specific uses is limited. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for age-related cognitive decline, sexual dysfunction, anxiety, ADHD, dyspepsia (indigestion), or insomnia.
That means the studies we have aren't robust enough yet to say whether it works for these purposes — not that it doesn't work, but that we don't have the proof to claim it does.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hops is generally well tolerated in the short term, but drowsiness can occur — so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Long-term safety hasn't been well studied.
The data advises against use during pregnancy. Safety information during breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best avoided while nursing.
In rare cases, supplements combining hops and soy have been linked to postmenopausal bleeding, though it's unclear which ingredient (or their combination) was responsible. Occupational exposure to hops dust — common in harvesting — is tied to chronic respiratory symptoms like dry cough and bronchitis, but this is less relevant to oral supplements unless you're sensitive to dust or pollen.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications) — hops can add to drowsiness. Also flag any hormone replacement therapy or estrogen-containing medications.
Medications metabolized through your liver's CYP1A2 or CYP3A4 pathways should be reviewed, though the actual risk appears small. No interactions are documented for any other major medication groups in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Hops extract may appeal to you if you're exploring options for sleep or anxiety, though the evidence for either is not yet established. If you take sedatives, hormone therapy, or medications broken down by your liver, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are not appropriate times to use it. A conversation with your healthcare provider can help you decide whether it fits your situation.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hops Extract by BulkSupplements.com can interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs) — hops may add to their sedating effect, potentially causing excessive drowsiness or impaired alertness.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Hops also interacts with estrogens, including hormone replacement therapy. Large amounts might compete for the same receptors your body uses to process these hormones, though most hops extracts contain only small amounts of the compounds responsible for this effect.
Minor interactions are documented with drugs that depend on liver metabolism through the CYP1A2 and CYP3A4 pathways — a wide range of common medications. The practical impact appears limited based on available studies, but the theoretical possibility exists.
Altogether, these interactions span 864 individual medications.
Before you start this product, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page, especially if you take sedatives, any form of hormone therapy, or medications your doctor says are metabolized by the liver.

For each ingredient in Hops Extract with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Hops flower extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of hops with sedative drugs might cause additive sedation.
Some animal research shows that hops has sedative effects.
Estrogens
Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of hops might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
In vitro research suggests that certain hops constituents can competitively bind to estrogen receptors. However, most hops extracts contain very small amounts of these constituents.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Hops extract does not seem to affect the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that flavonoid constituents of hops inhibit CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, does not affect levels of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.
