What’s inside
Low disclosure
Hound's Tongue by Flower Essence Services is a liquid extract containing one active ingredient: an infusion of Hound's Tongue. The product also contains brandy, water, and 40% alcohol as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We have no effectiveness data on file for this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
This product carries serious safety concerns. Hound's Tongue contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids—compounds toxic to the liver.
Chronic use of plants with these alkaloids is linked to veno-occlusive disease (VOD), a condition that blocks blood flow in the liver. Acute VOD can cause epigastric pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and ascites (fluid buildup in the abdomen) within days; liver enlargement and hardening can develop within weeks.
Because of these toxic alkaloids, internal use is not recommended. The product is rated Likely Unsafe in pregnancy because the alkaloids may harm the liver and fetus.
It is also rated Likely Unsafe while breastfeeding, as toxic compounds may pass into breast milk.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you do take this product, you should check it against any CYP3A4-inducing medications (drugs that speed up liver metabolism). This is a Moderate-severity interaction concern.
However, the product's own hepatotoxicity profile means the bigger risk comes from the product itself, not just drug interactions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Internal use of this product is not recommended due to documented liver toxicity from its alkaloid content. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have liver concerns, avoid it.
Anyone considering it should talk with their pharmacist or doctor first.

Hound's Tongue by Flower Essence Services Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hound's Tongue by Flower Essence Services interacts with a significant group of medications.
The product contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids—compounds that can damage the liver—and these are substrates of a key liver enzyme called cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Drugs that induce CYP3A4 (speed up this enzyme) may increase the conversion of these alkaloids to toxic metabolites, raising the risk of liver toxicity.
This is a Moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although we have interaction data only for CYP3A4 inducers, the safety profile of this product itself is the larger concern. Altogether, these interactions span 85 individual medications.
Before you take this product, check your exact prescriptions with the search tool on this page—especially if you're on any medication metabolized by CYP3A4. But be aware: the product's own hepatotoxic alkaloid content means internal use carries documented risks, independent of drug interactions.
