Myo-inositol is generally well tolerated at typical doses. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are mild digestive complaints — diarrhea, gas, and nausea.

One clinical study in children found reports of cold and allergy symptoms when inositol was combined with omega-3 fatty acids, though this was not universal. There's a single case report of a man hospitalized with manic symptoms after consuming an energy drink containing inositol and several other ingredients over 4 days, but it's unclear whether inositol or another component was responsible.
