Joy Tonic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Joy Tonic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Joy Tonic by Urban Moonshine
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Joy Tonic contains six active ingredients: rose petal extract, motherwort leaf and flower extract, linden leaf and flower extract, lemon balm leaf extract, lemongrass extract, and mugwort leaf extract. These are delivered in a liquid form with water and organic alcohol as inactive ingredients.
The product is formulated as a proprietary herbal blend, so the exact proportions of each herb aren't listed on the label — you'll see them grouped together. Each of the named botanicals has its own traditional use: motherwort and mugwort have been used historically for women's health, lemon balm and linden for calming, and lemongrass for digestive and general wellness support.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for Joy Tonic's ingredients is mixed. Lemon balm is possibly effective for cold sores, stress, and depression — that's the strongest rating we have for any single ingredient here.
Motherwort is possibly effective for bleeding support. For the other uses these herbs are traditionally marketed for — anxiety, sleep, menstrual regularity — the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate them reliably.
Linden, lemongrass, and mugwort all lack established effectiveness ratings in our data for the conditions they're commonly used for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Most of these herbs are generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but the safety data overall are limited, especially for long-term or high-dose use. Motherwort may cause diarrhea or stomach irritation orally; at doses over 3 grams it can cause uterine bleeding.
Linden has one case report of an allergic reaction to its pollen. Lemon balm can occasionally cause dizziness or sedation, though trials suggest this doesn't happen more often than with placebo.
Lemongrass should be used cautiously in concentrated or medicinal amounts. Mugwort may trigger allergic reactions, especially if you're sensitive to ragweed.
For pregnancy: motherwort, lemongrass, and mugwort are all traditionally thought to stimulate the uterus and are rated likely unsafe in pregnancy — avoid them. Lemon balm and linden lack enough safety data in pregnancy; talk to your doctor before use if you're pregnant.
Breastfeeding safety data for these herbs are also limited; check with your pharmacist or doctor before using while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Joy Tonic, double-check these medication types with your pharmacist: central nervous system depressants (sleeping pills, anxiety meds, narcotic pain relievers) — Motherwort and Lemon Balm both carry Moderate risk. Thyroid hormone replacement like levothyroxine (Moderate risk from Lemon Balm).
Lithium for bipolar disorder (Moderate risk from Linden). CYP3A4 substrate medications, which include many statins, blood pressure drugs, and immunosuppressants (Moderate risk from Lemongrass).
Glucuronidated drugs like certain pain relievers and psychiatric medications (Moderate risk from Lemongrass). Pentobarbital or other barbiturate sedatives (Moderate risk from Lemongrass).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Joy Tonic is a six-herb liquid blend that's generally well tolerated for short-term use but comes with significant documented interactions — especially if you take sedatives, thyroid hormones, lithium, or certain heart and cholesterol medications. If you're pregnant, several of these herbs should be avoided.
Before you start, check your exact medications using the tool on this page, and talk to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you take any prescription drugs.

Joy Tonic by Urban Moonshine Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Joy Tonic by Urban Moonshine contains six ingredients, and we've documented interactions with 848 individual medications across the product's active components.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Motherwort is the biggest concern here. It can cause sedation, and if you're taking other central nervous system depressants — things like sleeping pills, anxiety medications, or narcotic pain relievers — there's a theoretical risk of extra drowsiness.
Lemon balm carries the same CNS depressant concern at a Moderate severity level. Additionally, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy, so if you take levothyroxine or another thyroid medication, that's worth flagging.
Lemongrass poses three separate Moderate interactions: it may slow how your body metabolizes CYP3A4 substrates (a large category including many statins, blood pressure drugs, and immunosuppressants), speed up clearance of glucuronidated drugs (which include certain pain relievers and some psychiatric medications), and theoretically amplify the effects of pentobarbital, a sedative barbiturate. Linden carries a Moderate interaction with lithium — the diuretic properties might increase lithium levels and side effects, potentially requiring a dose adjustment.
We couldn't check rose petal extract — we hold no safety data for it. Altogether, these interactions span 848 individual medications.

Animal research shows that lemongrass and its constituent citral inhibit CYP3A4.
Glucuronidated Drugs
Theoretically, lemongrass might increase the clearance and decrease the levels of glucuronidated drugs.
Animal research shows that lemongrass and its constituent citral induce uridine diphosphoglucuronosyl transferase (UGT), the major phase 2 enzyme that is responsible for glucuronidation.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, lemongrass might increase the effects and adverse effects of pentobarbital.
Animal research shows that high doses of lemongrass essential oil increases sleep time and decreases time to fall asleep in animals administered pentobarbital.
org. Lemon Balm leaf extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
organic Motherwort leaf and flower extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking motherwort concomitantly with other CNS depressants may increase the risk of sedation.
Motherwort has been reported to cause CNS depression and sedation.
org. Linden leaf and flower extract
Lithium
Theoretically, due to its potential diuretic effects, linden might increase the effects and adverse effects of lithium.
Linden is thought to have diuretic properties. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
