L-Tryptophan Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Tryptophan against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-tryptophan, an amino acid your body uses to make serotonin and melatonin — compounds involved in mood and sleep. BulkSupplements.com offers it as a powder with no listed inactive ingredients (fillers or binders).
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence on L-tryptophan is mixed and sparse. For depression, it's rated possibly ineffective — meaning the data doesn't support it as a treatment.
For anxiety, athletic performance, teeth grinding (bruxism), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, there's insufficient reliable evidence to say whether it works. If you're considering this for mood or sleep, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the science supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, L-tryptophan is generally well tolerated, though common side effects include belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, flatulence, headache, heartburn, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach pain, blurred vision, and vomiting. The product carries a caution because of a contamination event in the late 1980s: over 1,500 cases of a serious neurological disorder called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) were linked to L-tryptophan, though about 95% traced to contaminated product from a single Japanese manufacturer.
The supplement was recalled in 1990 and strict FDA limits were put in place. Modern sources are considered safer, but the history matters.
For pregnancy, there is not enough safety data — avoid it. The same applies to breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before you take L-Tryptophan, check whether you use CNS depressants (sleeping pills, sedatives, opioid pain relievers, alcohol) — risk of major additive drowsiness — or serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, tramadol, certain migraine or pain medications) — Moderate risk of serotonin syndrome.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Tryptophan may appeal to those interested in mood or sleep support, but the evidence for common uses is weak or missing. If you take sedatives, antidepressants, or other serotonergic medications, you must check your exact drugs before starting — the interaction risk is real.
Talk with your pharmacist before adding this to your routine.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
BulkSupplements.com L-Tryptophan is an amino acid supplement that does interact with medications — most seriously with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, opioids, alcohol).
Taking L-tryptophan alongside these drugs could add to their sedative effect and increase drowsiness and fatigue; this is a Major-severity concern.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
It also interacts with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, certain pain medications, migraine treatments) at Moderate severity. L-Tryptophan is converted to serotonin in your body, so combining it with drugs that already raise serotonin carries a theoretical risk of serotonin syndrome — a serious condition involving confusion, muscle rigidity, and rapid heart rate — and other serotonergic side effects.
Additionally, before you start, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page. Altogether, these interactions span 394 individual medications.
