Most of these cases involved people whose immune systems were already compromised. When taken by mouth, mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, stomach discomfort, or diarrhea can occur, but these are uncommon.
In one trial, a probiotic combination containing L. acidophilus was linked to two cases of rash, though it's unclear whether the bacterium or another ingredient was responsible. Talk with your doctor before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system.
