Lavender Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by doTERRA
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lavender against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lavender flower. Lavender is the whole flower used in traditional and clinical preparations for conditions ranging from anxiety to pain.
The product has no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for lavender is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain).
For cancer-related pain, it's rated possibly ineffective. For alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), pre-procedural anxiety, and cancer-related fatigue, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, lavender flower is generally well tolerated in food amounts and appears well tolerated at larger doses too. The most common side effects you might notice are breath odor, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, belching, headache, and nausea.
Topically, it's usually well tolerated, though allergic skin reactions can happen with the oil. There are rare reports of gynecomastia (breast tissue enlargement) in young boys exposed to lavender oil.
Because safety data are limited outside approved forms, use medicinal amounts only with your doctor's guidance. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable data on file to know either way — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before combining with CNS depressants — sedating medications like sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, and opioids. Lavender may increase both their therapeutic effects and side effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
doTERRA Lavender may help with menstrual pain, though evidence for other common uses like anxiety is still uncertain. Its main caution is with sedating medications — lavender might strengthen their effects.
If you take any CNS depressants or have questions about how this fits your health picture, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Cns Depressants
Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.
