Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Supports memory and cognition; stress and mood.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, Cognitive function, Anxiety, Stress, Depression — and 3 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lemon Balm is rated "Possibly Effective" for Depression (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lemon Balm is rated "Possibly Effective" for Stress.
  • Also on file: Lemon Balm is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, Anxiety, Cognitive function.

The evidence we hold shows lemon balm is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) and for stress and mood. That means some clinical trials show benefit, but the data isn't yet conclusive — more research is needed to be sure.

If you're considering it for one of these uses, talk with your pharmacist about what the current evidence means for you.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lemon balm is generally well tolerated in the short term for most healthy adults, though long-term safety and high-dose safety haven't been well studied. The most commonly reported side effects from oral use — dizziness and sedation — don't appear to happen more often with lemon balm than with placebo.

One case of heart rhythm changes (atrioventricular block and QT prolongation) was reported in a young woman using a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm; symptoms resolved after stopping, but it's unclear whether lemon balm alone was responsible. If you're pregnant, the safety data isn't reliable enough — it's best to avoid it unless your doctor advises otherwise.

If you're breastfeeding, limited safety information exists, so talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use.
