Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Brain Forza's Lemon Balm R5 Extract is a single-ingredient supplement containing lemon balm aerial extract — the leaves and stems of the plant, concentrated into a standardized form. The capsule itself is vegetarian, and the other ingredients are fillers and flow agents (maltodextrin and rice fiber) to make the powder stable and easy to encapsulate.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: memory, cognition, stress and mood support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, Anxiety, Cognitive function, Depression, Insomnia — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lemon Balm is rated "Possibly Effective" for Depression (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lemon Balm is rated "Possibly Effective" for Stress.
  • Also on file: Lemon Balm is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, Anxiety, Cognitive function, and more.

The evidence for lemon balm rests on a handful of uses. It's possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) when applied topically or taken orally, and possibly effective for stress and depression when taken by mouth. "Possibly effective" means there's some clinical support, but the research isn't ironclad yet — more and better studies would help confirm it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults. The most commonly reported side effects are dizziness and sedation, though clinical trials show these don't happen more often than with placebo.

One rare case of heart rhythm changes and QT prolongation was reported in a young woman using a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, but it's unclear whether lemon balm itself was responsible. High-dose and long-term safety haven't been well studied, so we don't have a full picture of what happens if you take it for months or years at a stretch.

During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise. While breastfeeding, safety information is limited — talk with your doctor before using it.

Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you use any CNS depressants (sleep aids, sedatives, pain relievers that slow your nervous system) or thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Lemon balm has documented Moderate interactions with both drug categories and could make CNS depressants stronger or reduce how well your thyroid medication works.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Lemon Balm R5 Extract may help with cold sores, stress, or mood, and it's usually tolerated well in the short term. The main caution is if you take CNS depressants or thyroid hormone replacement — you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first, because lemon balm could amplify sedation or interfere with how well your thyroid medication works.

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or using it long-term, talk it over with your healthcare provider.
