HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lutein 15 mg by Nature's Blend
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains 2 active ingredients: lutein esters and zeaxanthin esters. Both are carotenoids, plant pigments that concentrate in the eye's macula (the part responsible for sharp central vision).
The product also contains several inactive ingredients — rice bran oil, gelatin, glycerin, sunflower oil, beeswax, soy lecithin, caramel, and purified water — which help deliver and stabilize the active compounds.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein esters are possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, but the evidence for other conditions — retinitis pigmentosa, necrotizing enterocolitis, retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia — rates as possibly ineffective. Zeaxanthin esters are possibly effective for AMD as well.
For zeaxanthin's other studied uses — age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, asthma, breast cancer, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia — the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both lutein esters and zeaxanthin esters are generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. Lutein at doses up to 20 mg daily hasn't caused reported adverse effects.
Both ingredients are rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, but the safety data on concentrated supplement doses (not food sources) during these periods is limited. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take any antidiabetes drug — including insulin, metformin, or other glucose-lowering medications — check it against this product before you start. Zeaxanthin may increase the risk of low blood sugar (a Moderate severity concern), and your doctor may want to monitor your blood sugar levels.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help protect eye health in age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, though the evidence is "possibly effective" rather than proven. The main caution is for anyone taking antidiabetes medication — the zeaxanthin may theoretically lower blood sugar further.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
