Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: lutein (as FloraGLO) and zeaxanthin, both naturally occurring carotenoids found in leafy greens and colorful vegetables. These ingredients are included because they concentrate in the retina and lens of the eye, where they may help protect vision.
The softgel also contains inactive ingredients — safflower oil, gelatin, glycerin, purified water, yellow beeswax, and mixed tocopherols — that help deliver the actives and preserve the formula.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is rated possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, though the evidence isn't conclusive. Zeaxanthin is also rated possibly effective for AMD.
For other conditions in the facts — retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia — lutein shows possibly ineffective ratings, and zeaxanthin's effectiveness for cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, asthma, and breast cancer isn't established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein at doses up to 20 mg daily hasn't resulted in adverse effects in the data we have, and it's generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. Zeaxanthin is also generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding: both ingredients are rated likely safe. That said, the safety data on higher supplement doses — as opposed to dietary amounts from food — isn't fully studied in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this dose is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs, double-check them first — zeaxanthin carries a Moderate interaction risk for low blood sugar. No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check, but run your full medication list through the search tool on this page to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lutein 20 mg makes sense if you're concerned about age-related eye health, especially AMD or cataracts. If you take diabetes medications, check your exact drugs with the tool below before starting — zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar.
Otherwise, both ingredients are well tolerated at this dose. As always, your pharmacist can help you decide if it fits your health picture.

Zeaxanthin Carotenoid
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
